What are the roles and responsibilities of a VP community? How important are the duties of the VP community? These are the things we will tackle below.
Who Is VP Community?
It is the most fundamental question we should ask. The first thing to be clear about the VP community is that there are two types of communities.
One is the community created by the government, and another one is the community created by a company.
Community Created By Company
The community created by a company can be divided into two types: localization community and core community. Localization communities are based on different regional communities, such as Europe or Asia.
While core communities are based on different product communities, such as AIOps or ITSM. The difference between them lies in their foundation.
Localization communities are usually built upon the legal requirements and cost-effective considerations of local governments. while core communities are built around product experts sharing information.
And also exchanging ideas around specific areas of interest. It is important to distinguish between these two types of VP members.
For example, for an AIOps core community, a VP member is not only an AIOps practitioner. But also an expert in related areas such as IT Service Management (ITSM).
It includes service catalogs, service catalogs management, incident management, problem management, etc. Therefore, a VP member must be willing to broaden their horizon to cover expertise.
Beyond what they have been working on for years in their current job role.
Community Created by Governmental Institutions
The other type of community is the one created by governmental institutions (e.g., governmental VPs). In most cases, those who are appointed as VPs will come from governmental institutions.
Since they usually have a long-term partnership with industry through governmental agencies. Such as National Information Security Agency (NISA) in Japan or National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) in the UK.
They are all responsible for cybersecurity issues with top leadership appointed by government officials. We can also see this type of partnership through government entities such as G-Cloud in the UK and GSA in the US.
It is both set up to provide cloud services for the public sector and public-sector contractors. Besides that, some sectors work together with industry at the city level to form the cloud city alliance like Cloud City Alliance (CCA) in Tokyo.
Where we can currently work on tech innovation initiatives with other 10 cities besides Tokyo. With all these efforts being made at different levels of society by region and country for developing a healthy VP community.
How to Build Up a VP Community?
Two things can help us build up a healthy VP community: one is the real-life experience and the other is the online platform.
Real-Life Experience Is Vital
The most important thing in terms of building a VP community is building up a real-life experience. And this is what many professional communities have been doing for years.
It’s important to organize a variety of events to have a real-life experience together. These events may include the following:
Online Platform Is Essential for Developing Healthy VP Community
Besides that, we should also build an online platform for sharing knowledge. And also ideas among VPs from different countries as well as sectors.
So this platform should be provided in the English language and enable VPs from different countries to communicate with each other.
